Altimeters

Question: Where can I download an instructional video about my altimeter?
Answer:   NEW!   View video here in QuickTime...

Question: My altitude readings are not correct. Why not?
Answer:Barometric pressure and altitude are directly correlated. It is crucial that you calibrate your barometer to the known barometric pressure for your area. This will ensure that your altimeter reading will be accurate. If you are unable to obtain the correct barometric pressure for your area, you can calibrate your altimeter to a known elevation. It is important that you calibrate either the barometer or the altimeter on a regular basis in order to get the most accurate readings. An acceptable variance for altimeter readings can be +/- 100 feet. However, during times of extreme high or low pressure situations, the altimeter variance can be greater than 100 feet.

Question: Why do I have four dashes across the screen in the Altimeter mode?
Answer:The altimeter uses the sea level barometric pressure to determine elevation. If your barometric pressure has not been calibrated correctly or frequently your altimeter will be inaccurate.

Question: Why is the display blinking in altimeter mode?
Answer:A blinking display in altimeter mode is an indication that your battery is going weak. Please change your battery as soon as possible.

Barometers

Question: Where can I download an instructional video about my barometer?
Answer:  NEW!  View video here in QuickTime...

Question: How do I find my sea level barometric pressure?
Answer:You can find your sea level barometric pressure on http://www.weather.gov or your local forecast. If the pressure is given in inHg, you can convert to mbars by multiplying the pressure in inHg by 33.864.

Question: If I have found my barometric pressure in inHg, how do I convert to mbars?
Answer:Multiply the pressure in inHg by 33.864 to convert to mbars.

Question: How often should I calibrate the barometer?
Answer:It is important that you calibrate the barometer on a regular basis in order to get the most accurate altimeter readings.

Question: What is the difference between Absolute barometric pressure and Sea Level barometric pressure?
Answer:

Absolute barometric pressure is the true pressure at any known location at any time. This number is unstable and not constant. Sea Level barometric pressure is its equivalent pressure corresponded to sea level. It is the station pressure reduced to sea level by an appropriate altitude dependant formula. The information found at www.weather.gov or your local airport has already been adjusted to sea level and this is the information to use while calibrating your Highgear barometer.

Answer:  NEW!    View video here in QuickTime...

Question: What is magnetic declination and how do I find my local declination?
Answer:

Declination is the angle between magnetic north and true north at a particular point on the Earth's surface. The following websites are good sources for finding local magnetic declination:

For declinations in the United States:
http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/seg/geomag/jsp/Declination.jsp

1. Enter your zip code in the area provided

2. Click "Get Location"

3. Scroll down and click "Compute"

For declinations in Canada:

http://www.gsc.nrcan.gc.ca/geomag/field/mdcalc_e.php

Question: When I try to calibrate my compass, I get an ERR message. Why?
Answer:

Because the compass is magnetic it may be affected by local sources of electromagnetic radiation (EMI). Avoid using the compass near appliances, in cars, near home security systems and other sources of EMI. If after several compass calibration attempts, you still see an ERR message, please demagnetize your compass.

To demagnetize your compass, hold all four buttons in at the same time.  Everything will light up on the screen.  Release and your watch will revert to factory settings.  While in the time mode, hold your watch face down close to the demagnetizer. Most retail stores and libraries have demagnetizing machines for anti-theft purposes. An example of a demagnetizer is a machine that deactivates the magnetic security strip with a product. If you still see an ERR message after demagnetizing, please contact the Highgear Customer Service department. (1-800-446-7587 or Email Us)

Question: How often should I calibrate my compass?
Answer:We recommend calibrating your compass before using it for the first time or when the battery has been changed. You will also need to calibrate your compass any time you leave for a hike or are using your compass in a new location where the declination may be different.

Question: What do the four lines that appear in the compass mode indicate?
Answer:After ten seconds of a compass reading, four dashes will appear on the display. This signifies the compass is in sleep mode in order to conserve battery life. To attain another 10 seconds of compass reading, quick press the Start/Lap button.

Pedometers

Question: How do I determine my stride length?
Answer:You’ll need a tape measure to accurately measure your stride. For an accurate stride length, mark a spot on the ground. Start with your toe to that point and take 10 natural strides of the type you want to measure (run, walk, jog, etc). Mark the place where the toe of your forward foot stopped. Measure the distance between the two points (in inches or centimeters), and divide by 10.

Question: How do I make my VIA pedometer more or less sensitive?
Answer:There is a sensitivity switch located underneath the belt clip.  Moving the switch to the left makes the pedometer less sensitive and moving it to the right makes the pedometer more sensitive.

Question: Can I run with the VIA?
Answer:
If you want to use the VIA waist pedometer to count steps when you are running, be sure to measure the length of your running stride.  Also, adjust the sensitivity switch.  We do not recommend using the VIA Wrist pedometer for running.

Question: Can I clear my total distance traveled?
Answer:Your VIA comes with two different odometers.  One will show you how far you have traveled since the step counter was last zeroed out.  This odometer can be cleared out by zeroing the step counter.  The other odometer is a total measurement of the distance traveled since the battery was last replaced.

Heart Rate Monitors

Question: How do I accurately take my heart rate using the finger-touch method?
Answer:A loose fit makes it difficult to attain an accurate reading. Make sure the watch is strapped snuggly to your wrist with the back plate laying flat on your skin above your wrist bone. Remain still and relax your arm on your hip while taking your heart rate. Moisten your middle and index fingers and place them on the sensors between the two humps. Press in your bottom finger until you see HR and two dashes come on the screen. Continue to hold your fingers there until you hear a beep. A reading should appear in 5-7 seconds. (You cannot take your active heart rate in calories mode. This mode only allows you to enter your resting heart rate.)

Question: How can I calculate my calories/fat burned during a workout?
Answer:You must set up personal data in the calories mode. Then, enter the chronograph mode and start the chronograph. Calories will automatically calculate if chronograph is running. If you are using the pulsetouch feature, you must regularly take a heart rate reading (in any mode other than calorie mode) in order to achieve the most accurate calories or fat burned calculation.

Question: The watch will not allow me to enter my personal data in the calories mode (KCAL). What am I doing wrong?
Answer:Before you start entering in your personal information you need to make sure that the chronograph is clear.  You can do this by pressing and holding the top left button.

Answer:  NEW!    View video here in QuickTime...

Question: I have an Axis watch, and I need to change the battery. However, the back plate doesn’t have a coin battery hatch?
Answer:Take your Axis to a watch repair shop that you trust to have the battery changed.

Question: Every time I press the Light button, my screen fades. What’s wrong?
Answer:This is an indication that your battery is going weak. Please change your battery as soon as possible.

Question: I have a SmartLatch and it won’t turn on. What’s wrong?
Answer:
Before you use your SmartLatch you will need to remove the plastic piece covering the battery. This plastic piece is used to preserve the battery life of your SmartLatch.

Question: I changed the battery in my Summit/AltiTech2 and the screen is still blank. What is wrong?
Answer:When you take the battery hatch off the Summit or AltiTech2 you will see a little gold tab that sticks out parallel to the hatch.  The new battery needs to go underneath this gold tab.  Sometimes people do not see this tab and push the new battery down over it. This would affect the battery connection.  If this is the case you can pry it up, carefully, so that the new battery can fit underneath it. If the gold tab is in place but you still do not see anything on the screen, your new battery might not be fully charged. Highgear suggests trying another new battery or testing the existing one to see if it is fully charged. If the problem persists, please feel free to call Highgear’s customer service department (888-295-4949).

Question: Can I use insect repellent or sunscreen while I wear my watch?
Answer:We recommend that you do not expose your watch to strong chemicals such as gasoline, cleaning solvents, acetone, alcohol, insect repellents, sunscreen and other toiletries, as they may damage the unit.

Question: What do the terms 30 Meters Water Resistant and 50 Meters Water Resistant mean?
Answer:

The Water Resistant mark is a common mark stamped on the back of wrist watches. It is usually accompanied by a rating in terms of meters of pressure to which the device is able to resist. These water resistant marks, however, do not generally indicate the point at which a watch's resistance to pressure is expected to fail. For example, a watch rated 30 Meters would not be expected to survive Scuba Diving to 30 Meters. The reason is that the rating describes the static water pressure that the watch will survive. However, any motion of the watch underwater will increase the water pressure on it.
